When I was a teenager, I performed as a clown named Houdi.
(And yes that is actually me years ago on the far left)
Back then, a clown stood out the moment they walked into the room. Bright orange hair, oversized shoes, colorful clothing, and a painted face made people smile before the first joke was ever told.
Why?
Because nobody else looked like that.
Today, things are different.
Walk through a shopping mall and you’ll see brightly colored hair, unique fashion, tattoos, oversized shoes, and styles that would have looked completely outrageous decades ago. What once made a clown instantly recognizable has, in many ways, become part of everyday culture.
That got me thinking…
The World Changes
The clown didn’t change because the clown was wrong.
The world changed.
And that’s a lesson every online marketer should remember.
Too many people keep using the same marketing methods year after year while wondering why their results aren’t what they used to be.
The answer isn’t always that your product is wrong.
It isn’t always that your opportunity is wrong.
Sometimes it’s simply that your audience has changed.
Your Message Doesn’t Have to Change
One of the biggest mistakes marketers make is believing they have to become someone they’re not.
You don’t.
Your integrity should stay the same.
Your values should stay the same.
Your passion should stay the same.
What should change is how you present your message.
The marketers who succeed long-term aren’t necessarily the loudest or the smartest.
They’re the ones who recognize when it’s time to adapt.
Meet People Where They Are
Years ago, long sales letters and flashy banners grabbed attention.
Today, people consume information through short videos, stories, images, social media posts, and authentic conversations.
The principles of good marketing haven’t changed.
People still buy from people they know, like, and trust.
People still want solutions to their problems.
People still respond to honesty and authenticity.
But the way we earn that attention has evolved.
Stay Authentic. Stay Relevant.
The goal isn’t to chase every new trend.
The goal is to communicate your message in a way today’s audience understands.
That’s exactly what successful businesses have done throughout history.
They didn’t abandon who they were.
They adjusted how they connected.
As I look back at my days as Houdi the Clown, I realize there’s a marketing lesson hidden behind the makeup.
Years ago, my costume was designed to stand out because it was different from everyone else.
Today, if I wanted to reach a modern audience, I’d still be Houdi—but I’d probably find new ways to connect.
That’s the lesson.
Don’t change who you are. Change how you communicate.
Because the marketers who continue learning, adapting, and growing are the ones who continue making an impact.
Your Action Step
Take a look at your marketing today and ask yourself:
Am I sharing yesterday’s message… or am I sharing today’s message in a way today’s audience wants to receive it?
The answer to that question could make all the difference in your business.
